Self-managed Abortion; Safe and Supported in the U.S. (SASS)

Managing one’s own abortion with pills is safe and effective, if one has access to good information. With abortion bans in many states and increasing restrictions, self-managed abortion is an option that everyone needs to know about.
On April 27, 2017, in collaboration with allies and partners in the U.S., Women Help Women (WHW) launched SASS – Self-managed Abortion; Safe and Supported (SASS). SASS provides one-on-one support and information to women in the U.S. who choose to use abortion pills on their own through secure, online communications with trained counselors overseas. The SASS webpage includes information on how to use abortion pills, what to expect from the medicines, and how to ascertain if medical care is needed. SASS also gives information about where clinics are available, and sources of funding and practical support (accommodation, travel support) for those seeking a clinic-based abortion.
SASS has trainers in 16 states with restricted abortion access, and in 2023 conducted over 300 “train the trainer” sessions, primarily in states with abortion bans and restrictions. SASS continually works with allies across the USA and internationally to advocate for new frameworks and policies that support the demedicalization and destigmatization of abortion.
